I am going to a wedding in Stuttgart in May. I will Sunday- Friday free (friday I need to be back in Stuttgart). I am wondering where else is realistic to go prior to the wedding and what is the best method to get there and back.... train? air? etc? I would like to go to Switz, Austria, or Northern Italy. Any ideas would be great... it's a short trip, but I want to make the most of it.

There is so much to see in that area, why go so far (Switz, Austria, Italy). You can go west to Heidelberg, south into Schwaben (Hechingen, Tuebingen, Herrenberg) or the No Black Forest (Freudenstadt, Calw, Alpirsbach). You can go east to Ulm, to the highest Gothic church spire in the world, which you can climb. North is the old capital of Ludwigsburg. Rothenburg ob der Tauber is nearby, as is Wuerzburg. If you want to go farther, go to Muenchen.

One of the nicest places very near Stuttgart is Tübingen (40 km away from Stuttgart). Make sure you go there, it's beautiful. It's a little town with wonderful architecture, really worth seeing - a one day visit.

You're not far from Lake Constance, too. There is the flower island of Mainau and in Konstanz, a border town, there's a Swiss railway station and within a very short time you could be in Zuerich (it's around 40 miles).
