Stuttgart car museums, two in one afternoon?

My husband and I are flying in to Stuttgart this Sept. on a Sunday. We will arrive before noon. Our hotel is near the train station. We had planned to tour the Porsche museum that afternoon and the the Mercedes Benz museum the following morning before heading to Munich for the rest of our trip. It turns out that the both museums are closed Mondays, and we don't want to delay our arrival in Munich by another day. Is it possible to see both museums between around 1:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.? Is there another way to handle this that I am not seeing?

In a word No! We spent a morning - approx. 4 hours doing the Porsche factory tour and then headed to the Mercedes Benz museum for approx. 4 hours. I hope you realise you have to book the Porsche factory tour in advance. We booked it on Oz about 5 months before we left.
The Mercede Benz museum was something else. You could spend the whole day there and barely do it justice.

I think we spent less than 2 hrs at the Porsche Museum and that was plenty of time. The museum is located adjacent to an S-bahn stop. I'm not sure how frequently the trains run on Sunday, so you might try to check that out to be sure you don't just miss a train and have to wait 30 minutes for the next. The museum is about a 15-20 euro taxi ride from the main train station.

No problem! The Porsche museum is easy to reach directly from the Hauptbahnhof via S-bahn. You can look up directions on the vvs.de website (stuttgart's regional transit authority). It's in German but if you use a browser like Chrome it can be translated into English automatically. If you do decide to rush over to the Mercedes museum, keep in mind that while it's close via S-Bahn, it's a good 10-15 minute walk from the NeckarPark stop to the museum itself. It might also appear you can go there via the U-11 line but that is a special line that only runs during special events and soccer games, so disregard it. I would guess that on a Sunday if you are able to make your connections relatively quickly and don't miss the trains, you're still looking at a good 30 minutes total transit time from Porsche to Mercedes. If you do miss trains it could be nearly an hour door-to-door. So I wouldn't attempt to do it unless you leave the Porsche museum by 3:30 p.m. or so. If you really wanted to see both, you could take a taxi, driving time would be maybe 15 minutes? but you'd have to call for one probably, and it wouldn't be cheap, at least 20 - 25 euros. (my husband is also a car nerd and we were just at Mercedes last week!)

It depends? You could theoretically do both but between transit times on a Sunday schedule you wouldn't really have time to spend more than 90 minutes at each. This means not doing a factory tour, obviously as well. I would instead focus on the Mercedes-Benz museum (unless you or your husband are much more interested in Porsche). It's a slightly better museum, and it's easy to spend more time there.

Thanks for the guidance. I really appreciate it. I think my husband and I have decided to start with Porsche (his favorite) and then if we feel up to it we will head to Mercedes for as long as we have the energy. We will be doing a BMW factory tour in Munich a few days later, so we can skip the other factory tours. You can probably gather that he is an admirer of German engineering. :)

We took a taxi from the Porsche museum to the Mercedes Benz museum. Like you, we were pressed for time.
