We want to go to Volksfest Sept 28-29 and am having a hard time finding reasonable accommodations. That being around $150 with breakfast and be clean and safe. Do you have any suggestions for us. Most near the festival are already booked and others are asking INSANE prices.
Isn't that always the way. Places near the festival know you'll pay anything. There are other places outside of town if you are willing to spend some time on local transport. I'd stay in Herrenberg. A little farther out but not so far by S-Bahn. In 2002 I stayed in Kirchgasse 1. Nice place, better price, and the owner speaks English.
I stayed at the Hilton last year and have a room this year but I am not going to pay what they are asking! I am willing to stay in Stuttgart but not out from there.
I just now looked on www.hrs.com and there were plenty of hotels for 80 euro or less for that time period in Stuttgart. I would look at the Motel One, Ibis or Etap. Double rooms were between 59-79 euro per night. Have stayed in an Ibis in Paris and a Motel One in Berlin and found them to be very nice. Imagine Stuttgart would be the same.
Downtown Stuttgart (HBF) to the Bad Canstatt fest site it all of 5-7 minutes on the S-bahn, it's the next stop from the Bahnhof. Stay in downtown Stuttgart, there's tons of hotels there. You could also stay in Esslingen, on the same S-bahn line as the Volksfest and a cute historic city surrounded by vineyards. Lastly, you could stay by the airport area (Millenium hotel, airporter hotels, etc.), which are all of 20 min by train from the fest site. Have fun! Also, if you're going in the later evening hours, you may need to make reservations to get into a tent.
