Studying in France so best way to communicate back in the US

I'm studying abroad in France this next year and I'm trying to find the best way to communicate with my family and friends. I heard that the French cell phone system is very expensive, so if anyone has any good advice on what would be the best way besides e-mail and IM, that would be awsome. Thanks!

Download Skype onto your computer, and get your friends and relatives to do the same. That'll mean free "calls" between subscribers, but better quality than MSN Messenger, etc. As well, Skype will allow you to make inexpensive calls to landlines back in the U-S (you just purchase credit as you go) and, for an additional fee, they'll also assign your computer a French telephone number. You could also explore several of the web companies that use VOIP to connect two phone numbers to make inexpensive calls. One you can check out is www.dingaling.ca...but there are many others.
