My student is studying in Paris for the year. What is the overall easiest, most reliable and cost effective choice for cell phone service?
If your student and you both have a computer, install Skype for free and then call each other for free via computer. Or else, pay $9.95/month and call 30 plus countries' landlines, cells, computers for free, including, of course, U.S.
One more thing: you can use your computers' speakers and buy a microphone at Radio Shack if you don't have a built-in one.
There is no overall easiest, most reliable, cost effective solution. It will all depend on how the phone will be used - often, for long calls, only for emergencies? Skype is one solution, but other ways might be better depending on your intended usage. Click on "how to search the helpline" for many, many recent discussions on cell phone options.
We are in Paris every year and found getting French SIM cards and French calling plan/cards (billed at per minute rates) the best alternative ---
esp. if she is not leaving Paris.
To talk to friends (US, other EU countries) I recommend Skype via computer to computer (free) or computer to phone (maybe 2 cents a minute).
Good luck!!!
Thank you all for your suggestions. I think we have our options mapped out now! Happy Travels to all.
