We're thinking about a side trip from Paris to Strasbourg from Jan. 4-7. Any recommendations for hotels? We're looking for affordable and clean. Nothing too fancy.
Rebecca,
My suggestion is: stay in Strasbourg, a very lovely city in terms of culture and history. The cathedral is simply amazing!!
I have stayed in Strasbourg twice; once you exit the train station you enter the Place de la Gare, go through that and one of the streets you enter into is
rue du Marie Kuss. Rue du Marie Kuss is perpendicular to Place da la Gare. There are several 2 and 3 star hotels on Rue du Marie Kuss.
When you step out of the train station, you will see the signs of a number of hotels, which are both affordable and clean. I stayed at Hotel Vendrome, opposite of the train station, where this charming receptionist,(maybe propietor?) named Beatrice was working. This hotel was definitely worth it, clean, affordable, charming. Parallel to rue du Marie Kuss is rue Kuhn ---also hotels there--the whole area across from the Place de la Gare is dotted with hotels. From that area you can walk straight to the centre ville. There are signs directing you to the sites in the centre ville.
If you want to stay in a hotel (in that immediate area) that is part of a chain, on 14, rue du Marie Kuss is Balladins Hotel-Restaurant, part of the Balladins chain in France. Don't know whether these hotels have A/C or not, some two-star hotels do have that luxury but you have to pay extra for it.
I myself never ask for it in France or Germany.
Basically, you will be paying much less in Strasbourg than you do in Paris for the same type and quality of room. No
need to stay at the Ibis...they are overpriced for what you get.
STRASBOURG is worth it, as is the rest of Alsace!!
Happy Travels!
