Hello, if time allows we may have time to visit Strasbourg, France towards the end of our rail trip (Which starts Friday, I cannot wait!). Has anyone been here? Is it worth a visit?
Strasbourg is a lovely town. We took a boat tour that traveled past many of the major sights, including the cathedral. We lunched at one of the world's great cheese restaurants - La Cloche a Fromage. The staff was very kind and the cheese was unforgettable (they could tell a story about the origin of every type of cheese they sold). You can see and do a lot in one day -- the scale of Strasbourg is just right.
I agree with Jim -- I've been several times, and took my parents last year, and they loved it as well. It's especially beautiful in springtime, which is finally beginning to arrive!!
I was in Strasbourg for a day and in Colmar for a day. Both were wonderful.
It is well worth it. It is a beautiful city and the River cruise was lovely. Actually I liked it more than the river cruise in Paris.
I have been there a few times and enjoyed each visit.
Hi, Yes, I stayed in Strasbourg twice both times in the area close to the train staion. Very interesting city, well worth your time there. It's one of my top favourite cities in France.
Strasbourg is absolutely worth a visit (my wife and I started our May 2010 France trip there). The cathedral is very nice, also the old town, river cruise. No tourist crowds whatsoever in May. The sort of place where you can just slow down and be there, vs. rushing to tick off a list of must see sights. We found a nice cafe where we had a number of meals and they made us feel very welcome on every visit. My impression was that it's a low key and pleasant city. If you have the chance to take the train to Colmar, that is worthwhile as well for the Unterlinden Museum. For the town itself, I think the old town of Strasbourg is as good or better than Colmar. But the Unterlinden is an amazing museum that is worth going out of your way for.
Agree with everyone else on Strasbourg, but I wasn't knocked out by the Unterlinden Museum in Colmar. If I had a tight schedule, I wouldn't go out of my way to see it, and I would just stay in Strasbourg.
I wasn't as taken with either Strasbourg or Colmar as most others are. However, I loved the Museum of Alsatian Life in Strasbourg, and would go back just to see more of it.
We only had an evening and a morning there, but we enjoyed our very short visit and it is def on the 'return to' list for someday...I'd love a full day there to explore - I thought it was beautiful, with the half-timber houses and the river thru the middle, (when we were there) the abundance of flowers...we were lucky (well, except for the noise) to couchsurf with people who lived practically on the doorstep of the cathedral...it was amazing.
One of my first weekends in Europe when I was a student was in Strasbourg. I really enjoyed it. What I most remember are the Wein Stub's all the Arab students, the Rhine, and visiting palace and seeing the room that Marie Antoinette stayed in on her to Paris to marry the king.... Pam
Thanks for the feedback everyone! :)
Two years ago we started our Christmas week and German Christmas markets at Strasbourg. It was a very interesting town in many ways. Convenient to get around with the tram and the market was terrific. I would easily go back for another day or two since it was cold and snowy when we were there.
Visited this past Dec. and found Strasbourg to be a very beautiful city. Kept telling myself, I MUST come back here in the spring or summer. The architecture is stunning, and the cathedral is one of my favorites. The massive clock located in one of the naves was intriguing. The trams are easy to use and it wasn't very difficult to find my way around the city. So, my vote would be yes, it is absolutely worth a visit.
