I will be in Strasbourg for 2 and a half days. I was thinking of taking a day trip to Colmar. Is that workable?
Any suggetions what to do in Colmar and Strasbourg?
Yes, it's feasible to do a day trip from Strasbourg to Colmar, the distance is about 50 miles. Here's a link to Rick's description of French Alsace, which includes Colmar: http://www.ricksteves.com/plan/destinations/france/02colmar.htm
Stew, Yes, it's absolutely possible to do a day trip to Colmar. I stayed in Colmar last year, and took a day trip to Strasbourg. The trip is only about an hour by train. When in Colmar, you might visit the Unterlinden Museum. It's a bit smaller than some, but very interesting. You may enjoy watching This Short Video (I got photos in many of the same places shown in the video). Happy travels!
Frankly, Colmar can be done in about an hour. I suggest skipping it and taking a day trip down the wine route towns past Obernai/Riquewihr/Eguisheim, etc.
Although I enjoyed Colmar, I don't think I could justify going there from Strasbourg. It's more of the same, only a little smaller. The Unterlinden museum was OK, and probably worth your time if you're in town anyway, but I wouldn't go to Colmar just to see it.
Would concur with the notion that others presented about going to Colmar if you're only in Alsace to 2 1/2 days (although my feelings are that Colmar is good for at LEAST 1/2 a day or a full day if you're a serious shopper!). Definitely hit the Route des Vins instead. It starts just to the west of Strasbourg and is incredibly well marked. My recommendation would be to take the motorway south about 25-30 kilometers to around the town of Obernai and THEN head west to the Route des Vins and then start heading south (the towns to the north aren't nearly as interesting). Sites I would recommend include: - Mont Sainte-Odile Abbey in the Vosges Mountains to the west of Obernai (BEAUTIFUL view and neat gardens) - Chateau Haut-Koenigsbourg (west of Selestat in the Vosges Mountains, it's a fourteenth century castle that was poorly restored by Kaiser Wilhelm (it was done how HIS engineer thought it should look!) - neat castle that's worth the drive up and gives a stunning view of valley
- The wine towns of Ribeauville, Riquewihr, Kayserberg, and Eguisheim. Yes, they are all a bit touristy, but they also all still have the true Alsatian flavor! Bottom line, if you only have 2 1/2 days, steer clear of Colmar. Spend a full day in Strasbourg, then the other day and a half on the Route des Vins! Feel free to contact me for further questions!!!! Bon voyage!
