Stopping between Geneva an Paris

We are intending traveling by train from Geneva to Paris and on to London. We would like to stop over somewhere between Geneva and Paris for a number of days in self catering accomodation. We would like it to be somewhere where we can explore the area on foot, eat nice food and drink french wine! Somewhere like Annecy would suit but accomodation here seems a long way out of our price range. I have had amazing help from kind travellers out there, and hoping that once again you have some good ideas. Thank you in anticipation.

How about Lyon? There are some nice old buildings and it's got a claim to be one of France's best cities for restaurants. If you'd prefer somewhere more rural and wine-based, the Beaujolais wine region is just north of Lyon and on your way.
