Hi, We are planning to drive from Strasbourg to Nice in late November. According to Google map, it will take at least 8 hours. So would like to ask for recommendations for a overnight stopover point along the way? William
Perouges for medieval town, countryside, and atmosphere (splurge on Hostellerie du Vieux Pérouges if it still has good ratings) , or for sophisticated dining and urban activities, Lyon. Weather could be iffy.
Stop at Lake Como? Gorgeous scenery. Maybe specifically Cernobbio.
Thanks for the replies
I want to rethink my suggestion for Perouges in November. When the term "medieval town" is used on this newsboard, it means a gorgeous place overrun with people carrying Rick Steves guidebooks! (I mean that in a nice way.) But Perouges can be quiet, even in season. It will still be a beautiful place in November, but it will be deserted. How about Geneva or Grenoble? I would like to recommend Besancon, as a historic town, with lots to do, where people actually live. But it's not far enough along your route. Note that there is a superb, female-owned Michelin 3-Star in Valence, with an inn, but that part of town (the only part we saw ... ) is mainly modern and a bit industrial.
Yes, Tim, Perouges is quiet but so so beautiful! We did stay at the Hostellerie the first time we went and had dinner at the restaurant, as well. Marvellous. And the village is so photogenic you can't stop photographing.
If you do follow the Michelin route through Switzerland, remember to buy a vignette.
The rental car may or may not already have a vignette on the windshield. After all others may have traveled into Switzerland before you. But as noted above, be sure to buy one if it doesn't have one.
