Is it worth stopping in Regensburg? If so, why? If not, do you have another recommendation?
Yes, I would encourage you to visit Regensburg. It is filled with old world charm and beautiful architecture.
Definitely stop over in Regensburg. It is a delightful little city with wonderful narrow streets for window shopping and a beautiful center square.
I much like Regensburg. I best enjoyed the Gothic Cathedral and the Danube River front. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its medieval buildings, alleyways and plazas. My wife really enjoyed a tour of the Thurn and Taxis palace, still occupied. Try to see the Town Hall and the nearby Roman ruins, Porta Praetoria. All of this is in a compact Altstadt and walking distance from the train station if that is how your are going to arrive.
Great place.

We've been to Regensburg and enjoyed it. But Passau is primo! We would go back there in a heartbeat. Maybe it's just me, but try www.altstadt-hotel.de -- I think the photo on their home page will make you want to go there!
Great tips everyone! I will follow up. Thanks.
Craig - we were also looking for a place to stop between Munich area and Prague. We did this drive summer 2006 and Regensburg was a delightful stop. It is a university town so we found it to be very lively. We got there basically in time for dinner and to head to our hotel - Hotel Orphee, very nice. In the morning we got up in order to stroll about the town, went to the river area and had sausages, went into the cathedral, and generally just walked about. As I recall there were boat tours and things very nearby that sounded REALLY interesting but we had only intended to sleep there so had to head out. I'd definitely recommend it as a stop, and next time I'll give it more than a 1/2 day.
