Hello fellow travelers,
I am going to wine country outside of Paris for several days in the middle of September. Does anyone know of wineries that welcome tourists to stomp grapes? Also, any recommended day tour companies in the Champagne, Chablis, Reims areas? Thanks!
Is it possible that there are places where they still "stomp" grapes? Surely it is all done mechanically nowadays?
Ohhh Lucy!
for Chablis, google Brendan Moore. If he's available, go with him! He's fantastic and takes you to terrific small producers. He's the person who finally got the lightbulb to turn on in my head re the differences in grands crush premiers crus, etc etc. a wonderful experience.
Knowing the strict industrial hygiene standards that the EU enforces, I'm going to assume that if anyone still juices the grapes this way, casual tourisst would certainly not be welcome to place their feet within a product meant for eventual human consumption.
Folk festival stuff.
From what I could find on the internet, no wineries stomp grapes for commercial wine production. However, several wineries in different countries in Europe do have wine-stomping festivals for people who want to get their feet 'wet' (so to speak). The result of this foot-stomping is either thrown away or sometimes used as fertilizer. It is not used to make wine for human consumption. You can google it if you're interested in knowing which wineries.
Lucille Ball lied ???
Oh, Ed. That episode has been re-running in my head since I first read this post! How can I get it to stop? Change the channel?
Denny...if you figure out how to change the channel, let me know. I have a stupid song running through my head (and I won't even say which one... although I should, cause it would probably go to your head) :))
@Ed - I don't think Lucy lied, she just did it 50 years ago. How quickly time flies.
Try 57 years ago... Happily, I saw it on reruns.
