Stifskeller St Peter restaurant in Salzburg

Does anyone have any comments on this restaurant? We will be in Salzburg in early November and would like to have dinner there. None of my guidebooks have the email address for this restaurant. Does anyone have it? Some reviews indicate the atmosphere is superior to the food but we want to try it anyway. Thanks!

I had a lovely dinner there in 2001. Tasty Wienerschnitzel & grune salat--though that's not asking too much from a kitchen. Still, they did a good job. Besides, how can you not visit a place where Charlemagne stayed and ate?

For an after-dinner beer, walk (or bus) up the river to the Augustiner Brewery/Monastery. Equally atmospheric (it's also over 1000 years old) and superb beer from the wooden barrel. Enjoy!

Susan,
We [husband, teen daughter, and I] ate lunch at the Stiftskeller in July 2006; we honestly can't remember much about the food except a very good cold soup to start that was buttermilk mango or something interesting like that. But we would have remembered bad food, I'm sure. I must admit the history was what really drew us; it was amazing to eat in a place where Charlemagne had eaten. Go, and enjoy!

Susan,
We were there 2 years ago in December when we were in Salzburg for the Cristmas Market. Great atmosphere and good, hearty food. Most of the resaurants in Salzburg have menus that are heavy on meat and sausage (every kind of wurst you can imagine!). Don't expect fine cuisine but traditional Austrian/German fare. We enjoyed it very much. My daughter and husband shared a platter meant for 2-4 people that had a trio of meat specialties, potatos and vegetables - they still talk about how good it was. If you can have locally caught fresh trout anywhere and you like fish, try it. I have never enjoyed freshwater fish so much as I did in Austria. Also, it sounds a little touristy, but we really enjoyed a Mozart dinner. It was served in a beautiful baroque room and we enjoyed a lovely concert along with a nice dinner. I can't remember the name of the restaurant but, you will see advertisements for several when you get there. Have fun!

Thank you all for the comments on Stiltzkeller. Reserving by email did now work so I called for the reservation for November 5. I was a bit surprised that they asked for a credt card number to confirm. Not sure about the various Wurst sausages but the trout sounds excellent!
