Rick describes a hike from Birg - Gimmelwald (via Brunli) in his guidebook. He says there is a 50-ft long section that follows a ledge along the Wasenegg Ridge that requires hikers to hold a rope so they don't fall 1000 feet down the mountainside. Can anyone describe this further? Is it a sheer drop-off on a cliff face? How narrow is the footpath in this section? Is the "scary" roped area truly only 50-ft long, or does it stretch further? We are experienced hikers and we'd really like to do this hike and follow the ridge. I am afraid of heights but I have "conquered" hikes with sections like this before... it helps to know what I am getting myself into, though, so I can visualize it ahead of time. Rick seems to suggest that it is just fine for the sure-footed so I think we'd be OK, and if not, our topographic map shows a good "detour" around this section so we won't get "stuck" there... just wondering if anyone has personal experience with this ledge, and if you could please provide some additional info. Thanks.
