What is better to stay on the island of ST. Mont Michel or near the island for a better view and picture opportunities?
Staying on the island for the magic and atmospheric place it is at night when the hordes leave. You can always sleep on the Mont and then in the morning go across the viaduct and get the views and photos looking back at it.
Some years ago my wife and I spent the night in the Hôtel du Mouton-Blanc on Mt.-St.-Michel and it was fabulous to be able to wander the deserted streets at night.
I would stay on the mOunt just to be there in the quiet of the evening and early morning, when it is indeed more magical.
BUT, pack only a small overnight bag,, the streets are steep and there is no hotel that will retrieve your luggage for you, you must lug it up yourself.
We stayed in Relais St. Michel on the island. We had a great time in the evening wandering the ramparts. My son and I got up at 6:30 in the morning to take some unforgettable pictures of the abbey and ramparts in the early morning fog. Plus, if you are on the island, you can tour the abbey early before the thundering herds arrive. Pack lightly, it is a steep climb up to the hotels, but definitely worth it.
Hi Darla. We have been to M-S-M twice and definitely would recommend staying on the island. We stayed at La Mere Poulard the first time and Les Terrasses Poulard on our second trip. Our favorite time on M-S-M was in the evenings after the tours left. You could wander the sidewalks, nooks and crannys with hardly anyone around. As previously stated you can always drive back to the mainland for some great photo ops. Enjoy!!
Thanks for all the replies. Does anyone know how far in advance you need reservations? Some of the hotels say there are no rooms available and it is a year away?
