Staying near Stuttgart

Our family of six is flying home from Stuttgart after a 2 week European vacation. We plan on spending our to last nights in that vicinity. Can anyone give suggestions for a good place to stay (quaint town) near Stuttgart? Our flight leaves at 10 am, so maybe within 45 mins of the airport.... Thanks !

We flew out of Stuttgart airport in 2002, and spent the night in Herrenberg before leaving. I think it meets your "quaint town" requirements. The town square is almost completely ringed with Fachwerk buildings. The S-Bahn ride to the airport from Herrenberg Bhf is only a few minutes more than from Stuttgart Hbf. We stayed at Kirchgasse 1, right on the town square with Karin, a very gracious, English speaking hostess.

Herrenberg is a 35 minute train ride from the airport and is indeed charming. That said, I think Esslingen is more charming and there's a little more to see and do. It's a 47 minute train ride to the airport, but there is also a direct bus that only takes 35 minutes. You'll be fine in either one of those cities. Weil Der Stadt is also interesting and charming, although it's slightly over an hour to the airport. But you say "nights" and I don't think either place will be terribly interesting for more than 8 hours of visiting. If you're staying more than one night, I'd stay in Stuttgart proper near the hauptbahnhof and enjoy what the city has to offer, which is plenty, maybe making an afternoon trip to Herrenberg or Esslingen, or a day trip to Tubingen or even Heidelberg.
