Staying in Vienna

I will be in Vienna for 3 days from Monday along with my wife. Can you please recommend a hotel/area where we should stay? Ideally, we want to be in the city center (if there is any) so that we can easily walk around the city. Our plan is enjoy the city by walking around.

Subsequently, we will be visiting Salzburg for 2 days. So again if you can recommend an area/hotel from where we can easily walk, that would be great.

This one in Vienna comes highly recommended by RS, his readers, and people who've posted on TripAdviser.

Hotel am Stephansplatz

It's in the center of the city directly across the street from the main cathedral, I believe.

Not a cheap hotel, but not astronomical pricing either.

I am staying there for two nights in September.

Not in center of Vienna but easily acccessible and in a good neighborhood is Apartments Lichtenstein on Grosschiffgasse. This is across the Danube from the downtown area.

Hi RG,
We were in Vienna two weeks ago, and we stayed in Pension Hargita. It was clean and simple, and is in RS book. It was steps from the underground station, and a pleasent 30 minute walk to the city center. We walked everywhere in Vienna!!! The room rates were also very reasonable. Here is the website:

Enjoy your trip to Vienna! :)

I’ll highly recommend Pension Suzanne, which is about half a block from the opera house right in the city center. It’s inexpensive and highly-rated on tripadvisor. Go there for reviews/photos, and also check out their website. The building looks like a Soviet-era office structure on the outside. Once inside and up the stairs, however, you’ll find a really great/sort of classy hotel for not much money in a big city. You can walk everywhere from here.
