Staying in Salzburg/Hallstatt

Hi all-
Plans are in the works for our 3 week trip to Italy and Austria in September/October. We're coming by train from Vienna to Hallstatt, staying there for one night and then going on by train to Salzburg for 4 nights. What are the differences between Hotel Trumer Stube and Gasthaus zur Goldenen Ente? We're a mature married couple and have traveled a lot but wonder if the Hotel Trumer is too far away from everything. Also, should we consider staying 2 nights in Hallstatt and only 3 in Salzburg instead of 4?

For a small place there's plenty to see in Hallstatt. We gave it two nights and were glad we did. Three nights seems good for Salzburg too.

I agree 2 nights in Hallstatt and 3 in Salzburg is appropriate. You could get by with one night in Hallstatt- you can really see everything easily in 1 day including the salt mine. Have stayed at the Goldenen Ente on 3 separate occasions and highly recommend it. It's a little pricey, but definately centrally located and very well run with a great breakfast, and helpful staff. If you do stay there try the Goulash soup!

Thanks, I think we'll ask for another day in Hallstatt and stay 3 in Salzburg. We'll stay at the Golden Ente, too. I just needed other opinions.

We were in Salzburg last week, and stayed at the Best Western Imlauer, which was very nice. Too long a story to explain how we ended up at a BW, but don't let the chain's name deter you; it was nicer than any BW I've seen in the US. It is about 15 minute's walk to the old town (much of which can be through the delightful gardens of the Mirabell Palace) and 7 or 8 to the train station (if your luggage is on rollers). The hotel restaurant (the Stieglebrau) was very good, as was the included breakfast. Loved Saltzburg.

X-cuuuse me, but is that really €96 per night, single! I spent €35 for a room in Freilassing, 8 min from the Hauptbahnhof. And that included breakfast. BW is curiously quiet about breakfast. One of the best dinners I've had in Europe was at Steiglbräu.
