We are staying in Munich for two nights in June and wanted to use our full day to travel by rail to see the Ludwig castles. How long does it take to travel there from Munich? Will we have enough time to see the castles and make it back by the last train? Thanks!
Only two nights? Your time would be better spent seeing the wonderful city of Munich.
Thank, I agree, but we're lucky to fit it in at all. We are meeting relatives in Italy right after so we can't really stay longer. I'm sure we'll be back though.
Not sure about the train, but we drive everywhere in Germany. As I recall, the castles are about an hour south of Munich. You can see both in 3-4 hrs. as well as a bit of shopping at the base of the castles.
The direct train fro Munich to Fuessen takes 2 hours each way. See bahn.de for schedules.
Michelle, As Lola mentioned, the rail trip is about two hours each way, and then a short Bus ride from the station to the Castles. One point to note is that you'll have to book reservations for the Castle tour, and you'll be assigned a specific time for the tour (be sure you're on-time!). One other option you might consider would be to take a guided tour to the Castles. Check This Website for details and costs. They have an office in the Munich Hbf, and will take care of not only the tour reservations but also the transportation. Given the fact you have such a short time in Munich, a guided tour might be a good option. Happy travels!
I stayed over in Fussen for the sidetrip to Neuschwanstein, but know many people who did it 1 day. It's only around a 2 hr train ride, so if you leave early-ish in AM, you can be in Fussen by late AM, have plenty of time to see Neuschwanstein, and, time-permitting, probably neighboring Schloss Hohenschawngau (sp!) too, and be back in Munich by early evening. I loved staying in the Bavarian countryside and enjoyed the local culture/atmosphere (nice contrast to Munich), and would suggest a night IF you have the time, but if not, than doing it as a daytrip from Munich IS very easy. Enjoy!
I did Fussen in one day back in October, and I didn't even catch the earliest train there. Very doable in one day. Second all the comments made previously. FYI, when you go to take your pictures on the Mary Bridge, be prepared to take them quickly. People will be jockeying for position and can be rude at times, just be patient. Also, if you are of an adventurous nature, cross the Mary Bridge and follow the trail that leads up to the cliff overlooking Neuschwanstein. Not for the faint of heart, but provides a wonderful view of Neuschwanstein, Hohenschwangau, Fussen & the Forggensee.
