I'm looking for recommendations for a place to stay in the Interlaken area for a couple of days in mid-August. We're a young couple but not doing the backpacking thing - we'd like a clean hotel with a private bath, but nothing fancy. The exchange rates are bad enough already! Interlaken looks pretty pricey; are there any nice clean places there or in the area that you can recommend? We're trying to keep nightly costs under $200 USD.
When I stay in Interlaken, I stay here:

Bypass Interlaken and stay in the Lauterbrunnen Valley or Muerren. Both of those places have some very affordable and nice accomodations plus the alpine scenery is much much nicer than Interlaken. You don't have to be hikers to stay in the mountain villages.
Forgive me for the endless questions, but while I'm at it - are there going to be any places to grab a decent latte and some breakfast up in these villages?
We've stayed at http://www.sunnydays.ch/e/index.html?
and highly recommend it. The breakfast is fantastic and the area beautiful.
Joel, Murren has breath taking views and hiking down the hillsde is one of our favorite memories of all of our trips. It has an asphalt hiking path. Keep traveling!
Charlene, we had the same experience you describe when we stayed in Murren '06...Murren has been the absolute highlight of all our many trips to Europe. "Hiking" around Murren, in the fields and pastures and mountains is absolutely magical! We would constantly stop, look at the incredible views all around us, and ask ourselves "is this really real?" We could not believe what we were seeing!
There seems to be common misperception that these mountain villages are just a mud hole on the side of a mountain with a couple of tents pitched around. No - that is not the case. The villages are highly developed towns that sit in a magical alpine location. Yes, there are lattes and even breakfast!
Hi Joel,
... we took rooms in the above hotel. A Romantik hotel is designated as such when accepted into the group of Romantik hotels. One requirement is that it is owned by parties who also reside in the hotel. Grindelwald is a short train trip (private line) leaving from Interlaken's Ost (East) Bahnhof. Goregous scenery up there. Check the above web site.
... Gute Reise / bon voyage! P
Joel, I can't quite remember the geography exactly but my wife and I stayed in Thun last summer. We found a great couple to stay with by the last name of Hanni. They were gracious hosts offering clean bedroom and shared bath. It was fine. I think it was about $90 a night. Google Switzerland Bed and Breakfasts and look for Thun.

Joel,
All of the suggestions above have merit, but they have largely ignored your question. We stayed at the Hotel Splendid last September...it is less than $200 per night...they have great breakfasts and wonderful staff...we were right in middle of Interlaken...lots to see and do both up the mountains...(Jungfraujock was expensive but worth the trip...)and around town.
