We booked a hotel in Granada for April 5-8 during Semana Santa. Was this a mistake? Will the crowds be overwhelming like in Sevilla during that time? We planned to avoid Sevilla during that time but should we cancel and avoid Granada also then? Also, if we do stay in Granada then, do you have any tips for getting tickets and making the visit to the Alhambra go smoothly? Thank you, Eddie Green
Reserve your Alhambra tickets in advance on the ServiCaixa website. When we were there last April, people who lined up for same-day tickets were disappointed; they sold out to the first few people in line.
I suspect that anywhere in Spain will be very busy at that time. If you have reservations keep them. Access to the Alhambra is numbers limited so the crowds there should be no worse than at any other time.
We were in Spain over Semana Santa several years ago and it was no problem at all - it was actually quite fun to see the parades in Madrid. We only had to deal with some changes to usual museums hours (but still got to see everything except a couple of really small places). We were in Madrid and Sevilla the following week and also only felt positively affected by the holiday. In both Madrid and Sevilla, we got to see some of the floats on display that normally are in storage or only on view if you pay an extra fee. Alhambra will be crowded, but it always is. Definitely book tickets ahead of time.
I'm going to Granada a few weeks before you and I highly recommend buying your tickets now. The mornings were almost all booked at certain times and I had one of the last slots-and this is still 2 months away. Also remember to get there at least an hour before your time allotment. You will need to pick up the tickets from the office and wait in a queue to get inside. Have fun.
