I have to drop off a rental car in Kempten, Germany before catching a train to Switzerland at 8:45 am. We will be spending the previous night and day in Fussen. Would it be better to spend two nights in Fussen and drive to Kempten early, or spend the second night in Kempten? It is only 30 miles, but only about half is on the autobahn and the rest is on smaller roads. Any opinions?
If you have the time, you might want to go up earlier to Kempten and look around. They are supposed to have some historical archeological digs there.
I believe our schedule will prohibit us doing much at all in Kempten. It is just the city that worked the best for us to drop off the car and take the train to Switzerland.
I guess the next question is from where are you coming to Füssen. Can you drop the car off there. Füssen is well situated for rail access. You probably don't need a car to get there at all.
Do you really want to take the risk of being hung up in traffic or waiting in the rental car checkin when the train leaves for Switzerland? How many hours do you allow as a buffer to allow for delays? I would't risk it (then I wouldn't rent a car in Bavaria, either). Go to Kempten the day before, turn in the car, and have a leisurely trip by public transportation to the Bahnhof the next morning.
