I've got a couple of questions about staying in Colmar and hope someone here can help. 1. Has anyone stayed at Hostellerie Le Marechal? It would be splurge for me and I'm wondering if it's worth it. It looks wonderful and has good reviews but I'm hoping I can get a personal opinion from someone here. 2. How horrible would it be trying to find a place to park near the hotel which is located in the "little Venice" area of the town? The hotel does not have parking and I'm just wondering if it would be doable. (I'd be staying on a weekend in July, if that makes a difference).
Nancy, Regarding your questions..... 1.) I've never stayed at Hostellerie Le Marechal, so can't offer any comments. I stayed at This Hotel in Colmar and would definitely recommend it. It's right in the centre of town and easy walking distance to the Unterlinden, restaurants, etc. 2.) I don't have any information on parking. In that situation, I'd check the Guidebook or contact the Hotel for information. Happy travels!
In most small to medium size cities, finding parking isn't usually a problem... except in Colmar! When I arrive in an unfamiliar town via auto, I always "follow the P's" (blue parking signs), but I seem to recall there was only one rather small lot near my hotel. The lot was absolutely packed, and I think I may have parked illegally for several hours, before going back in the evening once the cars had thinned out a little. This was in late April a few years ago, I can't imagine how it would be during a busier time of year.
Thanks Ken for the info, unfortunately Le Rapp was already booked up for my dates. Tom, thanks for the info, that's what I was afraid of. I prefer to stay in the city center but the hotel website just says "public parking is available in the surrounding area" which makes me a little bit wary. Their website does say private parking is available by reservation but it's 15Euro/day which is pretty steep (makes this more of a splurge than it already is). I'll have to think about it some more and check some hotels on the outskirts (not my first choice, but maybe my only option). The weekend I'm staying is also Bastille Day so maybe will be just crazy. Any more suggestions from others will be much appreciated.
Thanks
My husband and I stayed at the Etap in Colmar: http://www.etaphotel.com/gb/hotel-5079-etap-hotel-colmar-centre-ville/index.shtml It is centrally located, and like all Etap's cheap, (I think we payed about 40 euros a night for a double). Could be more expensive in July. Really basic but comfortable with hot water and a decent bed, all clean. I'm sorry I don't know about parking since we took a train. Don't miss the Isenheim Altarpiece at the Museum Unterlinden!
In September, 2005 we stayed in RS's recommended Hotel St Martin. It was very nice with a great location and loved the restaurant directly across the street. Parking was very easy a block or two away. We loved Colmar!
Thanks Karen, Hotel St Martin was one of the first I checked out. It was a bit over my budget so I had to pass, looks really nice though. My main problem is turning out to be the prices in July in some of these places - way more than at other times. If they aren't budget breakers, they're booked up already. I haven't given up yet, got a couple of places I'm waiting on response from. I've gotten some good recommendations from here, keep 'em coming.
I see on tripadvisor that there seems to be a well regarded B&B. They are personally not my style. Also as I remember when we stayed at Hotel St Martin it was a public lot not a private parking lot.
