I have not stayed in that area but I think you will be fine there. How far from the river is it? One thing you can do to check out the neighborhood is look at google earth, then look at the street view. You can go up and down streets, etc. We did that before our trip and we knew right away how to get to the apartment from the metro stop when we arrived.

My wife and I are finishing up a great week just off Rue de Beaumarchais on the edge of the 3rd near the 4th - very nice area, lots of foot traffic and very easy access to all the great sites. We like to walk and even with the winter cold (we're from San Francisco and don't do 32F!) we found it easy to get to everything. Very nice neighborhood I think.

It is a great area. I stayed in the 4th on my last trip. The Marais is one of my favorite areas in Paris.
Make sure to stop at Las du Fallafel for a falafel.

You will enjoy staying in that area. Keep in mind that Las du Fallafel is closed on Saturday. However, nearby is Chez Marianne which serves great fallafel as well as other excellent food.
