We are a family looking to experience a night in a grand Chateau somewhere near Chenonceau. We are driving and I am trying to find a memorable stay. When we were on the Rhine, we had a great experience in a Castle at Auf Schoenburg. It is hard judging the distances in this area though I am not opposed to a drive for the right accomodation. I can see that La Roseraie is a great alternative if I can't find what I am looking for. I want to step into a painting, into the past and experience a beautiful Chateau. Can you help?
We were at auf Schoenburg last year for the third rime over the years. Every trip needs a bit of luxiury. Here are a couple of web sites for chateau hotels. We did not try one of them last year but they look very promising. labourdaisiere.com and chateauxhotels.co.uk The properties are nearer Tours but last year the driving in the region was easy and we did Chenonceau and Chaumont very easily in one day from Amboise. The two places have an intertesting tie in throught Dianne dePortier and Catherine deMedici. Have a good trip.
In Chenonceaux itself, l'Auberge du Bon Laboureur is a step or two up from La Roseraie, and has a lovely restaurant. but we're still not talking chateau ambiance. My "Hotels de Charme" book, which also has those two and which has always served me well, has a listing a few km away in chissay-la-Touraine called Chateau de Chissay which sounds utterly luxurious, with a "majestic interior courtyard" and "luxurious, sometimes immense, and very comfortable rooms." Restaurant and pool as well. south of the river and a few km further away, it lists Chateau de Reignac, in Reignac-sur-Indre. It says it was formerly owned by the Marquis de Lafayette! It sounds like they've done it up in a contemporary style, which they say is successful, so try to find it online to see what you think. Me, I love staying at the Bon Laboureur and walking to the chateau, but I can certainly see why one would want to stay in a chateau oneself! I'll list one more, just for variety, closer to Chaumont (these are all still quite close). Hotel Chateau des Tertres in Onzain. Not as fancy, I don't think, and no restaurant unlike the others, but worth checking out online. Happy planning!
Cant remember the Chateau we stayed at- not as exciting an experience as you would expect, although nothing bad to say about it. I would second the recommendations for Le Bon Laboreur( fantastic restaurant) or La Roseraie. genuinely walking distance to Chenanceau
We stayed at the Chateau de Reignac, which Kim mentioned, for a family wedding held at the chateau. Lovely place. Avoid the room on the highest floor because it isn't as nice as the others. We, the relatives coming in from the States, were put in the Lafayette room. Fit for a marquise. There's a good restaurant a few kilometers away which we found on viamichelin.
We were in Chenonceau last month. About 5 miles East of Chenonceau along the north side of the Cher river there is a Fairy Tale castle hotel we pulled into and looked around. It is soooooo beautiful! If you can afford it, STAY HERE! Hotel du Chateau de Chissay. http://www.chateaudechissay.com/en
