Hello,
We will be in Vienna for 3 nights this August. Was wondering your thoughts on staying inside the ring in Vienna/Old Town or whether it is feasible to stay in Melk and take the train in each day for sightseeing. We like the peacefulness of a small town usually, but perhaps the commute would be too much of a hassle each day? One of those days will involve a trip to Schonbrunn. Thanks!
In my opinion Melk is too far away for the purpose of "day trips to Vienna." (Purely my opinion.) If you really must stay outside of Vienna, you might consider Klosterneuburg, which is only 15 minutes away by train. It is on the Danube and also has an impressive Abbey/Monastery ("Stift") dating from the 1100s. http://www.klosterneuburg.net/
The former wine village of Grinzing is another option. It is now a suburb of Vienna, but it retains its village charm for the most part. All of that having been said, Vienna is not Paris or London. In comparison with those cities, Vienna is small, relatively uncrowded and relaxed. Especially considering the limited amount of time you have, you might want to consider staying in Vienna after all. It's a lovely city and it would reduce the logistics of commuting. Wishing you a great trip!
i stayed in Vienna for 2 nights in July, 2010 at the Hilton Danube. Even though outside of downtown, it was a short walk to the subway station & easy access to sights of interest including the SCHLOSS SCHONBRUNN. Found driving and navigating a bit of a challenge, so suggest staying in Vienna and avoid the commute. The public transportation was very good. Side note, i grew up in Millstadt, Il, glad to see other folks from the area able to enjoy a trip to Europe. Good Luck!
Thanks all for your help. Sounds like our plan should be to stay in Vienna, which will be lovely!
