We are in the Munich area today and leave for Salzburg tomorrow. Afterward, driving to Tyrol and castles areas. Will end with Oberammergau and back to Munich. Would it be better to stay in Garmisch or Reutte for two - three nights? Thanks anyone who has a tip on this! Erin
Garmisch-Partenkirchen, by far. Although there are cuter towns in the Bavarian/Tyrolian Alps, GaP is still pretty attractive. And it has the most restaurants, most hotels, best hiking, etc. If Reutte wasn't in the Alps, nobody would mention it. It has a few Alpine-style buildings, but it's mostly an unremarkable modern town.
Another vote for Oberammergau. Five years ago I stayed here. No restaurant (but breakfast included), but it's a short walk into town with your choice of restaurants. Frau Richter is very gracious and speaks good English, and the price is good for Oberammergau.
Hi Erin, Between the two you mention, I'd go with Garmisch. If I could choose anywhere in the area's you mentioned, it would be Mittenwald. Paul
Jack Wolfskin is a chain store found in any major town in Germany. No reason to stop in it unless you want to check out the German version of REI.
Try Mittenwald. I've been to GPK, St. Anton am Arlberg, etc. and Mittenwald is the neatest little Bavarian town you'll ever see.
