So, we have 3 nights - we can either spend all 3 in Munich, or 2 in Fussen area and 1 in Munich. We will be coming from Rothenburg. We want to see Dachau, and the castles and luge in Fussen area. The third night we will be meeting a friend in Munich so need to spend the night there. Also, the morning after the 3rd night will be a Monday, so Dachau will be closed. Also, any suggestions on where to say at either place that is resonably priced. Thanks
Thanks so much for the info on where to stay. I guess my bigger question that I was not specific about, is whether to spend 3 nights in Munich or 2 in Fussen and 1 in Munich. Any ideas, or thoughts?
Just returned from both. We stayed at Suzanne's B&B in Fussen and was very pleased. It is near the train station. As a town, Fussen shuts down early and also on rainy days, so I would limit my stay in Fussen to one night in order to see the castles and then move on to Munich. There is so much to see and do in Munich. We stayed at the Lamier Hof in Munich. It is two blocks from the Nymph. Palace and only a short tram ride from the main train station.
I have links to a few place often recommended on this site at the bottom of my Munich webpage. Royal is probably the most reasonable, although people have described the neighborhood as "seedy" - not dangerous, just interesting. Next would be the three places around Marienplatz. Uhland is supposed to be a nice place, but doesn't fit my definition of "reasonably priced". Laimerhof looks nice, but is a ways from downtown (near Nymphenburg). But there is a streetcar from there to the Hbf. As for staying in Fuessen, there are a lot of places in Fuessen and out closer to the castles. I'm sure you'll get recommendations. For my money, I'd stay in Pfronten. It's near Reutte but a lot nicer. It's about ½ hr by bus to Fuessen. You can get to Pfronten via Garmisch-Partenkirchen using a Bayern-Ticket. Try here.
How are you travelling? Train or driving?
And if you post a name of a place you recommend, have the courtesy to give the link to it and how much you spent per person per night. I already gave the link to Aggenstein, in Pfronten. They charge €29,50 per night per person in a double. I stayed elsewhere, and they charge a little less, but they don't speak English so I am not going to recommend them.
Brenda, there is enough to see in Munich for three nights (at least a week, I've spent over 2 weeks there). Stay in Munich and take a day trip to the castles. In my opinion, Dachau is not a must see, but if you must see it, half a day.
In regards to Dachau, it was (in my opinion) very important to see. We took the train from Munich after breakfast and were back by lunch. We arrived at Dachau and from the train took a bus to the site. We did the self tour and also watched the English film.
Thanks so much for all the info so far. We will be traveling by train.
Hi Brenda, I would spend a night in Fussen, and two in Munich. Fussen is a cute town, but other than the castles ( a must see), there isn't too terribly much to see. Munich, on the other hand, can keep you busy for a week. Plus, munich makes a better base to see many bavarian sites. You could do the castles and luge run in a day at fussen, if you would rather just have one accomodation in Munich, though.
Good Luck!
2nd nomination for Suzzane's! It was clean & welcoming and made for a handy home-base for the castles. It's reasonable and is close to the train stattion. Excellent breafast in the AM. http://www.suzannes.de/html/usa.htm Many people go to Neuschwanstein as a day-trip but I was glad I stayed close by. After a day seeing the castles, it was nice to stay in Fussen, get a feel for a small Bavarian town, etc. I stayed 2 nights (arrived early evening from Munich, checked into Suzzane's & went to dinner; up early next day for full castle day, spent that 2nd night @ Suzzane's, then took train back to Munich in AM). In Munich, I liked this place; http://www.the4you.de/.
It's a hostel, BUT, top 2 floors provide hotel rooms. My room was spacious & clean and had pvt bath. Easy walk from train station; on a safe, quiet street. Also an easy walk to the Marienplatz. And I agree w/ post above re: Dachau IS a VERY important destination, IMHO. Perhaps if one has been to another camp in Europe and is pressed for time, they can skip it. But, otherwise, I would list it as one of Munich's "musts" (again, IMHO). Educational, emotional, moving and memorable. It's also VERY easy to do- around 30 by train from Munich; busses marked "KZ" take you from Dachau station rigt to the camp/museum/memorials. Good luck w/ the travel planning and have an excellent time in Germany!
Brenda, Rather than having to change Hotels, my suggestion would be to stay in Munich for the three nights. You can easily take a day trip to Fussen, and then spend your time touring Munich in the evenings. There's so much to see and do in Munich! I've always stayed at Hotel Uhland on visits to Munich, and would certainly recommend it! It's located in a quiet residential area, the rooms are very comfortable, the breakfasts are awesome and the owners are wonderful. Once you know the way, it's an easy 10-15 minute walk from the Munich HBf. I'd have to dig through my records to find the price I paid, but the current prices are posted on their website. You'll have to decide if they're "reasonably priced". The information on my costs may not be relevant to your situation, as I was in a "single". Happy travels!
We stayed in Fussen twice several years ago,and travelled to Munich and Dachau on a day trip. The Pension Elise was wonderful, tucked away in Bad Faulenbach, with a lovely walking trail and pond nearby. We had a little balcony outside our cosy room, the owner (or manager) was very pleasant and accomodating, and breakfast was wonderful! We were there three days and hated to leave.
Brenda,
I stayed in Munich at the Uhland Hotel and took day trips to Dachau and the castles. There's so much to do in Munich, I'd stay there all 3 days.
Brenda, We spent 4 nights in Fussen at Suzannes B&B which was very nice. We did a day trip to Dachau which was worth seeing. We also did the castles and the Luge ride(actually we went back to the luge a second day for my teenagers). I would think it would be hard to do the castles, luge and see any of the surrounding area with a day trip from Munich. It was an awesome time. Have a great trip.
If you opt for staying right below the castles, as we did, then I highly recommend Hotel Muller. You'll need to take a taxi to/from the train station, depending on the time of day (the bus schedule is limited to the heart of the day).
