Starting in Paris, ending in Amsterdam. Ideas?

The plane tickets are bought. We leave on July 21st, are taking a 2 day layover in Iceland (please stop irrupting volcano), then onto Paris on July 24th. My boyfriend flys out of Amsterdam on 8/1, early afternoon, and then I will continue traveling until 8/18, flying out of Paris. What I need help with right now is ideas between Paris and Amsterdam with that amount of time. We are thinking maybe visit a bit of Western Germany, Brugges, and not sure what else. I know we don't have much time so I don't want to load us down too much. Rent a car, train?

Thank you!

Hi, Kirsten. Train is so easy in that area, I wouldn't bother with car (unless someone recommends a great drive!), and I'm usually one of the 'car' guys on here.

You'd have time to do a day trip to London, or 1 night - but that might feel a bit rushed. I'd just take my time through Belgium on up to Amsterdam, and stop along the way - Antwerp, if you like modern architecture, Rotterdam might be worth a day. Or head strait to Amdam, and day trip to Leiden/Delft or Haarlem.

Just some ideas. Hope you have a great trip! =)

That's eight nights, including Amsterdam and Paris, right? You don't have to add anything--I'd do 5 nights Paris and 3 Amsterdam--but you could do a night or two in Brugges. I did an AMS-Brugges-Paris trip once (10 days though) and it was very nice.

Allowing for travel time between Paris and Amsterdam, you easily could spend all your time in those two cities. At best you could spend one night and parts of two days in Bruges on your way from Paris to Amsterdam. If you do more than that, you will not have a good balance between sightseeing time and travel time.

A car is a hindrance, not an asset, in large cities. Take the train from Paris to Bruges and from Bruges to Amsterdam.

The train also will be your best choice for your solo travel after your boyfriend leaves. Before suggesting places for you to to go on your own it would be helpful to know if you want to limit yourself to cities or if you want to spend some time in smaller towns. What are your special interests?

If you are within a few years of college age, you may prefer Ghent or Leuven to Bruges.

We are 28 and 30 years old. I'll put up another post to get some feed back and add more details for the solo part of my trip. My boyfriend also mentioned an interest in possibly stopping in Luxembourg. Thoughts?
