Starting in Paris, ending in Amsterdam- any itinerary ideas?

We will be staying for 12 nights. I was thinking of day trips from Paris to Reims and/or Chartres, and then heading up to Belgium (Bruges/Ghent) and ending up in Amsterdam for 2-3 nights before heading home. Would like to see more of France on the way. Any suggestions?

I agree with Eli. I liked Ghent more than Bruges. And from Amsterdam, I took day trips to Rotterdam, The Hague, Delft and Alkmaar. There's not much France between Paris and Belgium. But there are several good day trips from Paris. Besides the two you mentioned (both excellent choices), there's Versailles, Fontainebleau, and Rouens. Are you traveling by train or renting a car?

Thanks for your reply Chani. We will definitely be traveling the bulk of our trip by train, but if it makes sense to rent a car in certain places, we will do that too.

Another vote for Ghent. Look up the STAM Museum in Ghent - really enjoyed that and the castle is really nice. My sister and I were there last October and the weather was perfect - almost too warm! If you like beer we ended up at this bar we called the troll bar ... http://www.trollekelder.be/

Bruges, Ghent, and the Netherlands are all good by train. Not sure how much of northern France is that accessible without a car, but if you have to drop it off in Belgium, it is likely to cost much more than it's worth.

Hi Dominique. I definitely recommend a daytrip to Chartres. It is only an hour from Paris by train. I liked Ghent more than Bruges (I spent a day in each) and when I left Ghent, I wished I could spend another day there.

Chartres is great, both cathedral and village. If you go to Reims, consider renting a car for a couple of hours and driving to Laon. Again, the cathedral and village are quite nice. We bought food in Laon and had dinner with wine on the train ride back to Paris.

We just came back from a trip similar to yours. We went from Paris to Cochem to Bruges and Amsterdam. Buy your museum passes for Paris ahead of time. We loved Bruges. We went to several museums there and you can climb the Bell Tower. We had a great time!
