Start in Amsterdam-then need ideas for a couple days

We will be in the Amsterdam area for one week-end of May-beginning of June. We will be staying with friends in Amsterdam for 4 days We would like to travel to a nearby location for the remaining 3-4 days before leaving from Amsterdam. I would love any ideas or suggestions.

-Don't have a lot of money to spend.
-Not sure about traveling with car, more comfortable with train
-love castles, churches, history
-Will have 8 year old, also senior citizen in tow
-Have been to Paris; would possibly like to explore other areas in France
-Was looking at Germany, (Neuschwenstein) but looks expensive to get there.

Distance and expense go together. Delft and The Hague would be easy and reasonable day trips from Amsterdam. The Arnhem Open-Air Folk Museum and even Utrecht would occupy another day.

"Will have 8 year old, also senior citizen in tow"

For the 8 year old, try the Nederlands Spoorwegmuseum (Dutch rail museum) in nearby Utrecht.

Dani, from Amsterdam, Brussels with a day trip to Bruges is certainly a good choice, especially since you have eliminated Paris. However, since you didn't eliminate due to prior visit, I would suggest consideration of London. It is certainly more accessible than southern Germany and offers a great deal to see. You do not mention whether the 4 days includes round trip transportation time. If so, you would probably be best served by choosing Brussels. If not, I would say, London.

Hi,
Yes we need to go back to Amsterdam and leave from there. We have been to London. I'm guess I think we would like to stay in Belgium for a day or 2, and then wondering if we should go to France or Germany across the border to find some cathedrals/castles/churches. What makes the most sense?

Thanks so much for your help?

There is an ICE train from Amsterdam to Colonge "Koln", Frankfort etc. you may want to look into. I always drive to Germany, it is very easy to do and well marked. I never drive to Brussels or Paris; train only. Booking your train travel locally or directly with the web site is most cases is easy and much cheaper than using USA rail pass. I have saved a ton with Thayls and Eurostar. Check with your friends in Amsterdam and they may be able to buy the tickets for you.
