Rick S. has stated that the best view (in his opinion) of the Vatican is from atop the St. Peter's Basilica dome. He failed to mention it costs 7 euros however.

St. Peter's Basilica dome. He failed to mention it costs 7 euros That's incorrect. Rick mentions the price on page 225 of his Rome 2008 book: "€6 to climb dome" (I assume you're not complaining about the €1 difference in cost?)And the view is worth it!

6 euros...7 euro...15 euros...It is the best view and worth what you would pay for two cups of gelato. You can see the garden behind the basillica and Bernini's amazing piazza stretching out from the church.
