Do you think the St Ouen Flea Market in Paris is a good suggestion for a small group of American high school students? We are traveling Easter weekend. Are they even open then? Feedback, please.
It would be the rare teenager who would find a flea market of interest. Take them instead to the Science Park in La Villette. You can get there on the metro or by boat on Canal St. Martin (more fun).
Merci, bien, Norma! Wow, I just looked at la Villette website and am blown away! Why have I never heard of this site before? In addition to the continent's largest science center, the music conservatory offers (free?) recitals for the evening. I am always looking for an evening activity for teens that doesn't include sitting in a bar or flopping around the hotel disturbing other guests. I like to keep the students out in the city until their bedtime! I am so grateful that you directed me to this website. Do you think the flea market would be safe enough to take my art students for some interesting photography subjects?
Thanks again.
Plenty of seedy characters as you walk from the metro stop to the actual flea market site, so watch your belongings. If everyone has essentials in their moneybelts and keeps their wits about them, it should be OK.
My children loved the flea market. Just be sure that what they buy will fit in their luggage to bring home. Also, as suggested above, keep valuables under wraps and just keep a few Euro out for purchases.
Personally, I find Puces de Vanves (in the 14th arr., I think) much more interesting and am more likely to find little (inexpensive) treasures to take home.
Thank you Shelley for the suggestion of Puce de Vanves. I like having an alternative. I see that they are open every Sat. and Sun., including holidays, which is perfect because we will be there on Easter weekend.
The Vanves market closes at 1:00 pm so go in the morning. We arrived there just after noon hour and many of the vendors were already packing up to leave.
