I am looking up some train times and cannot find a train from st goar to interlaken. I figured we will have to take a train from koblenz to mannheim and then catch another train to interlake, totaling 6 hours travel time...it seems like ther has to be a better way. I am completely new at trains and would appreciate ANY advice you could give me on the best way to get from st goar germany to interlake switzerland
According to the Swiss Rail website (www.sbb.ch/en), the journey takes 6.5-7.5 hours and usually has multiple connections depending on which journey you take; typically in Mainz and Basel.
so i didnt realise it was so far. I had written down that is was about 5 hours and i dont know where i got that from. Has anyone done this particular journey? is it a hassel to travel so much this day? or is the scenery worth it... it looks like there is a train that runs at night but it changes at almost 1am and again around 5/6am... i doubt i would get any sleep so it doesnt make sense to do that and end up being too tired to hike in gimmelwald the next day! does anyone have any idea? i think if we catch the train out of st goar at 6.20am we can get to interlaken around 1 or 2... we are staying in hostel st goar, and my concern is if we will be able to get a bus that early (like 530 am) or walk to the station.... ahh... you know when you think you have things planned and then you realize you messed up?
Using Rick's website, click on Eurail Pass Store, then on Plan Your Rail Trip. On this next screen, click on Deutsche Bahn Website. On this page, enter your itinerary with your travel date and other info; i.e., from St. Goar to Interlaken. You will then get several train schedules. On the bottom left, ask to see "details for all". You will then get a listing of all stops and the type of train (ICE, regional, etc.). Before we leave the States, I use this site to run off copies of our possible itineraries. Really comes in handy while we are travelling. It looks like you would go through Frankfurt and would take about 6-6.5 hrs. Have fun!
Hey Denise,
I did look through that website. it looks like we will be going through frankfurt. Since there are many different routes and type of trains id like to wait till i get there a couple days before (or in amsterdam if possible) to make any reservations. Do you see this being a problem? (will it be hard to catch a train without a res in july on this route?)it looks like the reservations are not required on many trains.
Thanks
Christy,
we had a similar route on our recent trip. We were staying in Bacharach and heading to Lauterbrunnen. What we did was take the CityNightLine train that runs from Amsterdam, thru Cologne, Mainz and on to Basel and ends in Zurich.
We checked out of our place in Bacharach and rode the train up to Cologne to see the cathedral and spend some time and then caught it at 23:45. There were NO changes of trains. We got off in Basel SBB (around 6:15-30 i think) instead of Zurich as there was a quicker connection to Bern and then Interlaken from Basel.
Christy, I think you'll be fine making the reservation at the train station in Amsterdam. I believe they recommend reservations for the high speed trains (ICE) and always for the night trains. Of course, it costs extra. Should be fun--I'm jealous.
thanks for all the info!
