St. Gallen, Switzerland and Munich

Three couples are going to Munich, Salzburg, and Prague for 11 days this summer. We are spending 4 nights in Munich and are planning on seeing the city, castles, and Dachau. Then we'll move on to Salzburg. One couple wants to go to St. Gallen in Switzerland while we're in Munich. Is this a good day trip? Is it worth the hassle of getting there? AND how DO we get there? :-) Thanks

"One couple wants to go to St. Gallen in Switzerland while we're in Munich. Is this a good day trip? " No. The quickest rail connection is over three hours one way, and it probably takes longer to drive.

Since you are traveling with 2 other couples, a bigger consideration might be ...how big a deal is a trip to St Gallen to the couple that wants to go there? Is it going to stress friendships if you don't go? Do you know what makes them want to go there? Maybe have that couple check into the travel connections, times, and how it will fit into your itinerary ...how much of the day is spent traveling and how much is left to tour the town and then maybe they will give up on the idea by themselves.

Deb, You might mention to the couple that wants to travel to St. Gallen that the trip will be a minimum of 3H:24M. There's a train departing Munich at 07:17 with arrival at 10:41 (direct, reservations compulsory). The last train returning to Munich departs at 18:01, arriving at 22:17 (time 4H:16M, 4 changes, reservations compulsory on one leg). Note that these schedules may be different at that time. You'll have to check closer to your departure time. If the couple is determined to visit St. Gallen, they might wish to pay a visit to the Euraide office in the Munich station to get the tickets and travel times organized. I've found their English-speaking staff to be VERY helpful. Happy travels!
