Since the suggestions re Amboise and Paris picnics were so helpful, I have one more question. From Amboise we are heading to St. Emilion for a couple of days. Our general philosophy for those 2 days is relax, drink wine, eat good food, relax, drink wine etc etc...we would like to do a wine tour--can we do this from the tourist office, and arrange it when we get there, or do we need to book/arrange anything in advance? We've booked a hotel, but that's about it...should I be doing more?
We were in St. Emilion in May and loved it. We did not tour a vineyard but I think the tourist office will arrange it for you. A must see are the caves that store thousands of bottles of wine all arranged by year. There are lots of wine shops that have tastings and will ship wine home for you--but it is expensive. A restaurant that we liked is in the heart of the little town and is under a canopy with grape vines climbing over it--easy to find. There are some very steep streets in St. Emilion so make sure you have the proper shoes. There were some women wearing stilletos trying to navigate these streets. Enjoy!
