St. Denis

My husband and I both seniors and with slight mobility issues would like to visit St. Denis on our trip to Paris in September. We have read that safety is an issue there. Any thoughts from other seniors? How would we get there from central Paris?

During the hours you would be in St. Denis, I doubt you will have any problems with safety. Take the metro line 13 from Champs-Elysees-Clemenceau in the direction of St. Denis. There is a stop for the Basilica.

Chani is right and it is a short walk to the Basilica from the Metro station.

I went by myself,, and as stated, felt safe during day,, but I could see at night I might have felt a bit differently. There is a cafe that faces the church,, right in the square up front, I put my ebook on the table for a minute, a waiter actually approached me and told me to be careful and put it away as leaving it out was not safe, he said they had had some cases of valuables being snatched off tables by run bys,, no danger to you personally , but just to your stuff. I enjoyed my visit there immensely and do recommend you do it, its amazing, its not crowded, and I thought there was alot to see and absorb,, take a sweater, I found the lower levels very cool( underground crypts )..
As I said,, I do consider it safe enough ,, just be aware of your stuff. Same for anywhere I guess really.

We were recently in Paris and went to St Denis. It is a long metro ride(we had no change of lines-direct) but the metro is very near the basillica. It is definitely worth a visit and there was/is a photography exhibit of excellent photos of the statues that you will see inside the basillica. After our visit we decided to walk around the market street which was bustling with people. The area has a gritty feel but is perfectly safe in the day. It feels very different from St Germaine, the Marais, etc. Other than St Denis you will not see much charm in that part of Paris. Give it a try-you will be glad you made the trip. We packed a lot of sights into our four day stay in Paris before we headed to Burgundy and Provence so if you have any questions email me. Have a wonderful trip!

According to the SNCF website, it is a 23-24 minute ride on the Line 13 metro, from Champs Elysees-Clemenceau, which is central Paris.

We are also seniors and went to St.Denis last year. It is close to the metro and it seems it may have been on the same street, but we did have to ask for directions. We felt perfectly safe but were there in the daytime. Since St.Denis closes early you should not have a problem. It is a Cathedral that you don't want to miss.

Guess we qualify as seniors husband is 60 and I am 61. We visited St. Denis during our trip to Paris last November. The basilica is less than a block from the Metro. We felt totally safe. In terms of the mobility issues, there ARE steps to the crypt, located below the basilica. I didn't count the number of steps, but but if you go slowly, you should be fine. It is a wonderful place, not frequented by many tourists. There were 6 other people there the morning we went. Metro line 13 will get you there, but be aware that this line splits in two directions. Going to the Basilique take the train with the sign St-Denis Université and NOT the one Asnières-Gennevilliers. Stop is one before the last one - Basilique Saint-Denis. The area is perfectly safe during the day -- don't know about the evening. Enjoy your trip.
