Hoping to take my family skiing mid April. Looking for a site likely to have open slopes in good shape - really need good beginners slopes. Also hoping to be within a few hrs drive of site-seeing/cultural/historical locations. Where would you go?

In April, your options will be restricted to the slopes at upper elevations. Depending on the year, conditions can vary greatly. The place I know best that fits your request would be the upper glacier of the Zugspitze, which you can reach either by a cogwheel train or cable car from Garmisch-Partkenkirchen. Ga-P is about a 40 minute drive from Ludwig's famous castles, and one of his mountain-top retreats sits within hiking distance of the town.
