Can anyone tell me what the tourist crowd in Paris is like during the first week of April compared to the busiest time of the year? Are the museums and other attractions just overrun with tourists in early April?
We were there toward the end of May and did not find it too bad. The Musee 'dOrsay crowd for example was nowhere near what we experienced in San Francisco when we came home and say the traveling exhibit from the d'Orsay! The line for the Eiffel Tower was nuts, we had done it before and skipped it.
I've been in Paris early in April during Easter Week. Very crowded. In 2011, Easter is later in the month, so I wouldn't expect crowding. The weather is still chilly until the middle of the month.
I'll add a third "it's not too bad at all in April" to the other replies. Museum lines can be long-ish at any time of year... I always plan a Big Museum Trip to start as soon as the joint opens, and haven't ever had trouble in spring, fall, or winter. And yes, in April the weather can be chilly, but can also be GLORIOUS and sunny and mild - really perfect. But do bring a brelly and take it with you if there's any rain at all forecast. And enjoy! April in Paris really is pretty close to heaven.
There are some world cities that are always crowded. It just varies from very crowded to really crowded. Unfortunately Paris, Rome, Prague, etc. fall into that hole. After all, it is Spring time in Paris. But compared to the busiest time, it will be less but you may have feeling we get from time to time -- if it is this crowd now, what is like when it is really crowded. But you are in Paris, on vacation, and will a little patience you will be fine. And it is better than June or July.
A lot of European families are on vacation in Paris during their spring breaks. Travel season to Paris becomes heavier from that time through the summer.
