Spending an Evening in Munich with a Child

After touring southern Germany, we will be arriving back in Munich (we are spending 3 days there the week prior) on a Thursday evening around 6 or 7pm and catching a train to Venice at 11:40pm. We will have a car and our 9-year-old will be with us. Does anyone have any suggestions of what to do during these hours since most museums will be closed and I'm not thinking a beer hall would be the best place to hang out with a child? Thanks much for any/all suggestions or advice!

Kim, I always enjoy wandering around Marienplatz and watching the activity and people. There are some really good street entertainers! Also, many of the stores are open in the evenings, so you could do a bit of browsing. Cheers!

Go to the Hofbrau Haus!! It is fine for a 9 year old - he will get a kick out if the oompa bands. I have taken my son there twice and he was bummed that our last stop in Munich we went without him - he was napping (he's a teenager now).

I would also suggest a beer hall. If Hofbrau is too loud and full of drunk tourists, try Augustiner in the pedestrian zone near Karlstor. It's not far from the train station. Also Spaten and Franziskaner north of Marienplatz are fun. If it's warm enough, on the north side of the train station is Augustiner-Keller. You can sit outside at the beautiful and popular beer garden and they have a playground for children: http://www.augustinerkeller.de/de/Biergarten/Der_Spielplatz.htm Even though your train doesn't leave until 11:40, get there early and it will most likely already be waiting.
