Spains Raval District, Safe?

I am looking for apartments in Spain I never really thought about it but many apartment vendors are saying things that would lead me to think - this side isn't so nice? Is it?
Take it that I live on the South Side of Chicago and am very aware (not afraid) of my surroundings? I am going with my husband.

Thoughts?

Amanda, I think you mean you'll be in Barcelona??
I found this information....

El Raval is a barrio in Ciutat Vella district of Barcelona, Spain. The neighborhood is also known as Barri Xino, meaning "Chinatown." El Raval is one of the two historical neighbourhoods that border the Rambla (the other being the Barri Gòtic). The neighborhood is home to 200,000 people.

An area historically infamous for its nightlife and cabarets, as well as prostitution and crime, El Raval has changed significantly in recent years and, due its central location, has become a minor attraction of Barcelona. It is currently the home to a very diverse immigrant community (47,4% of its population was born abroad[1]), ranging from Bangladeshis and Indonesians, to a more recent Eastern european community, especially from Romania. El Raval is also becoming one of the hippest up-and-coming neighbourhoods of Barcelona where many artists live and work. It is home to many bars, restaurants, and night spots.

Amanda, you're a few years ahead of the curve if you are looking for a hip neighborhood. Right now it is still edgy and pre-gentrified. Lots of artists, punks and BoHos mixing with the immigrants, prostitutes and scary mafia types. I wouldn't walk around waving fistfuls of money, but if you're used to the big city you'll be absolutely fine. Check out the open air juice bar on C/ Pintor Fortuny, and the coffee shops in the plaza in front of the modern art museum. Enjoy the trip.

Adynata I am laughing at the thought of Amanda running in the streets waving fistful of money.

Amanda: what did you end up deciding?
