Spain with kids in August

This August we are flying into Barcelona and out of Madrid with 3 weeks in between. Travelling with my husband and I are our two daughters (8 and 6) who are seasoned travellers and open to adventure. We are thinking of staying in the north eastern part of the country (Madrid being the farthest south) because of the heat... The only thing we've booked so far is a week in a cute little town on the coast north of Barcelona. Also considering going up to Basque country.

Any suggestions for kid/family friendly places?

...I don't have any suggestions (yet), but will be lurking your thread. We're planning the southern half of Spain plus a little portugal in June 2011 with our 3 kids -- boy 10, girl 7, girl 6 -- so we might just ride your coat-tails a bit.

What's the cute little town you have already selected?

My bet is ...................................Cadaques.

Think about the nortwest too -- maybe even all the way to La Coruna.

Do you want to continue basing yourselves in 1 or 2 places for the remaining two weeks? You actually have plenty of time to do a nice tour across northern Spain in the two weeks remaining. Let us know how far afield you want to roam.

The town we are staying in is Begur (outside Gerona) where we've rented a duplex with 2 bedrooms and a private pool in the backyard - 5-10 min walk to the beach. Very much looking forward to that!

As for the northern part, we were thinking of 4-5 nights there (possibly based in San Sebastian?) and 4 nights in Madrid (with a daytrip to Toledo). We have 3 nights in Barcelona when we arrive...

So many choices, but definitely not a bad problem to have!

We took our then 4 year old to Spain 2 years ago. We started in BCN and ended in Madrid 2 weeks later. We really enjoyed Parc Guell, the block of discord, and the Joan Miro modern art museum. Probably because a lot of the art work looks like it was done by a 4 year old. ; ) We never exactly made it to Sagrada Familia becase there was a playground and park right across the street from it. Got to keep the child happy for everyone's enjoyment. We also liked riding the cable car down to the beach area. Our daughter liked walking around the Boquria looking at all the food for sale. We rented apts in BCN, Sevilla, and Madrid to give us extra space. Loquo.com and welcomesevilla.com. Riding the Metro was also a big hit. Go slow, try to balance cathedrals and museums with parks. My daughter had a report due this fall on Christopher Columbus; she knew to go right to her scrapbook for pictures of his tomb, and Isabel and Ferdinand. I knew she retained something--yeah!!
