Planning a europe trip for next year focusing on Germany and decided to add a week in spain (found a flight from Cologne to barcelona). Not sure what to see, I am thinking Barcelona and Madrid, is 3 days in each city enough? Any good smaller cities, day trips?? Also I am considering flying to Marrakech with easyjet from Madrid, has anyone been there? whats's it like? appreciate any itinerary help
Cora, take a flight to Seville, Malaga or Jerez de la Frontera, rent a car and take a tour to Jerez, Seville, Malaga, Gibraltar and Granada. You'll need a week but that's the single most beautiful, most historical and worth-visiting part of Spain (Andalusia).
I know I'm going to get flak for this, but I prefer Madrid over Barcelona, both for the cultural attractions and the nightlife. I'd spend 2 days to tour Barcelona and four in Madrid. A nice day trip is to take the fast AVE train to Toledo, but buy your tickets as soon as you arrive in Madrid, since you might find your preferred travel times sold out, espy on weekends or holidays. Rick has an excellent section on Toledo. If you do have the time, Andreas' suggestion about touring Andalucia is an excellent one. I would maybe leave out Malaga and Gibraltar, and do a Jerez-Sevilla-Ronda-Granada run instead. Andalucia is what Spain is all about.
I can not comment on it we are doing sitges and Barcelona but one of my best friends recently went to marrakech and RAVED about it!!!!!
3 days in BCN and MAD is just about right and they are both top notch cities. As an alternative, consider 5-6 days in Andalucia (Sevilla, Granada, and the Pueblos Blancos (if you like small towns)) followed by 1-2 days in Madrid before flying home.
Enjoy!
