I'm going to Spain for 12 days in October, flying into Barcelona and out of Madrid. Travel in between will be by train at my whim - I'm considering Bilbao, Sevilla, Cuenca, Avila, Segovia, Figueres......not all, of course, those are just among my current thoughts (I'm going in October). My primary reason for posting is to ask about any favourite offline apps for my iPhone that you think would be really handy - phrasebooks, maps, walking tours, museum guides, whatever. And, of course, any input on favourite places to visit. I'm traveling solo.
I liked the Word Magic Compact English-Spanish Dictionary. It was a free app and worked out great for looking up items on menus. If you need to learn basic phrases, World Nomads Spanish will do the trick. It was also a free app. Both can be upgraded to more extensive versions, but I don't really think that it would be necessary for a traveler.
I did screen shots using Google maps, but it did not have enough detail. You may want a subway ap, like Allsubway. By all means sign up for Skype on your phone, and use it for calls when you are near wi-fi hot spots.
Not an app, but a good source is the Moon Guide To Spain...great book with lots of valuable information. From Madrid, Barcelona is approximatley 3 hours via train. Toledo from Madrid 1/2 hour. Sevilla 2 1/2 hours Avila is the last stop before Salamanca, about and hour I recall. Would recommend Salamanca over Avial as it has more to offer. Avila does have the wall around it which can be seen from a distance. Purchase tickets on line from RENFE up to 62 1/2 days prior to departure and save substantially.
