Sarah, when I went to Spain I found a really unbelieveable fare from Chicago to London, round trip. I then took Ryanair to Spain, and EasyJet back to London. You might look at other options like that to cut the cost, particularly if you find a good special to a different location.

the 4 month before rule sounds about right. however, I found it all depends on how flexible you want to be. for example....we really had our hearts set on flying thru Paris on our way to Spain and then thru Amsterdam on the way home (twin cities). and that was consistently around $1000-$1100. But due to various things I didn't actually purchase our tickets until just less than 3 months before our trip and ended up spending about $500 more than I originally wanted to and did not get this flight because it was $1300 by the time I purchased our tickets. We ended up with going thru Amsterdam on the way there and thru JFK on the way home.

However, I did find alot of fares around the $1000 range but those either flew thru cities we did not want to stop in or had longer layovers (we wanted the shortest trip lengths as possible). I also wanted to arrive in Barcelona either around noon or mid-afternoon so then our options were less.

I did start checking what kinds of flights were out there about 6 months before our trip and found the prices of the flights we were interested in stayed the same until after that 4 month mark. I also liked the kayak.com site that searches all airlines.

good luck!

oh yea, I should add that we are arriving in Barcelona and going back home from Madrid so that may have bumped up the cost of our tickets a bit.

Last time I checked, which was actually a few minutes ago, kayak.com does show easyjet flights. I am looking at the same combination of flights except out of Seattle.

We have always departed from a different city than the arrival flight, not much added cost and doing the route you want is worth it.

I have been looking at the tickets for spain for september 2010 and they are getting more expensive in 1 month from $796 to $ 848 for the same tickets. Is this a sign that i should just get them since euro is loosing its value. As per earlier email I was advised to wait and get them around end of apr early may.

Sarah: I am not a fan of "wait and see"....my husband and I like sitting in the exit row (which on a 10+ hour non-stop makes a BIG difference). These seats go fast...I book my tickets the first day I can (330 days from the return date usually). If you see a great fare, book it and be done with it. I am not willing to sit in a middle aisle just to save $100 by buying my ticket at the last minute. I do my research, figuring out which dates and routes are the least expensive, and then buy my tickets (and get my exit row seats!). Have fun.
