Spain's Inquisition Tour over Christmas.

Our trip morphed from Madrid and Barcelona, the week before Christmas, to what we now call the Inquisition Tour. The mixed cultural cities of Madrid, plus Toledo, Cordova and Seville, known also for Jewish history.

Medieval cities with history and holiday lighting. With shorter days, and 10 nights, suggestions that are special, quirky and must do!

Maybe a little off kilter to get replies, that is what we are calling our trip. I've worked for Jewish institutions, we both know the history, as well my husband, going further with that of the Romans.

I hope people will share special gems of what seems like magical places.

I have to say it: Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!

Doug, I don't anticipate Spain starting a new one over Christmas, but the shortened headline reminds me of the Columbia Journalism Review's back page. They used to, and still may, list media's own clumsy meanings and unintended consequences.

Doug's quoting the famous Monty Python sketch where a husband and wife are arguing, and finally one of them says "Well, I didn't expect the Spanish Inquisition!" At this point a group of fake Spaniards and Inquisitors leap out from around the corner, shouting "Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition! Our weapons are fear, stealth, and . . . er . . ." they try this again and again, always messing up, and then procede to "torture" the hapless couple.

No-one who's seen this sketch can hear the words "Spanish Inquisition" with a straight face ever again.

Thanks, Meg, I hadn't seen that one. Glad you improved the way we look at the Inquisition.

Gerona, a nice day trip from Barcelona, is also rich in Jewish history. In fact, I seem to remember that they have a center dedicated to this oft-forgotten part of their past.
