Spain pre-tour ideas

I am a solo woman traveler who will have 3-4 extra days before the Barcelona-Madrid tour begins. I'm looking for some ideas of how to fill that time. Since the tour will be active, I was thinking of "relaxing on the Med" with a little touring on the side. Sitting on a beach sounds nice for awhile. Is the water warm enough for swimming in mid-September? Snorkeling or other easy water activities? I enjoy gardens, castles and photography. I'm willing to take trains/buses and staying either in one location or several. I'm considerig hostels, B&Bs or other inexpensive lodging. My budget for this time is low to moderate. I want to make safe plans. I arrive at 7:30 in the evening on a Wednesday, mid-September, and the tour begins Sunday evening. I also have full day and half at the end to spend near Madrid. Tour ends Sunday after breakfast, flight leaves at noon on Tuesday. I would appreciate suggestions and advice. I've done a bit of traveling, but this is my first solo trip.

Madrid day trip to Toledo would be good if you have seen the sights of Madrid before. Otherwise, walking tour of the city - Park Retrio, The Prado, Gran Via, The Palace, Plaza Mayor, San Martin Market...you will not go wrong for sure. There is a fantastic garden not that far from Barcelona as I recall. You will most likely need to drive to it, however. Located directly on the ocean and its steep cliffs. Cap Roig el Llegat d'un Somni Fundacio Caixa de Girona. (This informationi is from the book I purchases there.) I think there is a web site. Definitely a great experience. I was there with a tour group and do not remember the details of the exact location, etc.
