Spain itinerary help needed!

My husband and I are going to be in Spain for 9 nights in mid-Sep. We are flying into and out of Madrid. I figure we will spend a couple of nights in Madrid, but after that I just don't know.

Should we try to do both Barcelona and Seville as well? Plus, what about Granada? The pictures I've seen are beautiful. I know we could fit in all these places if we really wanted to, but they're just in completely opposite directions, and I don't want us to feel too rushed. I want to really get to see the parts of the country we go to and not just rush from city to city.

Also, I would love to spend a couple of nights in a sleepy little beach town. I do not want a super touristy town full of AI's. But I would love to find a small town with some beautiful beaches nearby, maybe on the east coast. It will be warm enough to swim in mid-sep right?

Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated!

With only 9 nights and this being a vast country and 2 days in Madrid that leaves 7- Bus to Toledo 2 nights Train to Cordoba 2 nights then to Sevilla 2 nights then back to Madrid.
Any way to change flight to Madrid then out of Granada? This would leave you time to head down that way to Nerja on the coast.

Nope, there's no way to change my flight. I got a crazy deal ($280 RT incl. taxes and fees from Seattle to Madrid), but it's non-refundable, and to change it would cost more than the flight itself! :)

We did a similar trip flying in and out of Madrid. I would use the trains, www.renfe.es, to check schedules. Just stop over at Cordoba for 4 hours or so on the way to Sevilla. From Seville take the train to Granada and back to Sevilla. Then go to the coast. Barcelona is the complete other direction and a very long way from Madrid. We loved Toledo, Sevilla, Granada, and Cordoba. If I had to leave one out I would say Cordoba. Madrid is a big city but don't miss the Prado Museum or the Palacio. It is like Versailles!
