Hi ~ I am very excited be be finally traveling to Spain and was wondering about a short leg on the Camino de Santiago and thoughts on a general itinerary. I arrive in Madrid Jun 23 and will stay 2 days then would like to walk a short (3-4 day) leg of the pilgrimage trail. I was thinking Logrono (wine country) to Pamplona or vice versa but think that may take longer. Also, I'm wondering about baggage transport for things I don't need to carry as well as whether or not I need to haul a sleeping bag. Next I am interested in heading to the north coast for a few days in a quiet villa (I won't have a car). And possibly 1 day to explore the picos de europa. I depart Madrid July 3rd. (just FYI, I want to see as much as I can, but generally prefer to stay 2 to 3 days in a location to get the feel vs. hoping on trains and buses every day.
thanks in advance for the help!
Hi Linda, I can understand you excitement on going to Spain and walking the Camino. I walked the Camino last year from St Jean Pied du Port France to Santiago last year in 33 days. In fact I was walking into Santo Domingo de la Calzada one year ago today! The leg you are thinking about (Pamplona to Logrono) I walked in 4 days so it is possible. also the normal way of travel is east to west, the direction of travel to Santiago. However you will need to get a Pilgrims Passport in able to stay in the alburgues along the way. You can get one in Pamplona or from the American Pilgrims on the Camino before you go. Pilgrims that didn't desire to carry their backpacks normally sent them ahead via taxi, I don't know what they charged but it is done. You will need a sleeping bag or a sleeping bag liner, the part of the Camino you are thinking of doing is warm so the liner should suffice. I see you live in Seattle, there is a local chapter of the American Pilgrims there, so if you contact them they can also give you insight. If you're interested I'm attaching a link to my blog I kept while walking, I will also attach some links to some good websites for the Camino. If you have any specific question feel free to PM me!
