The one thing that makes Spain unique among western European nations is its Moorish heritage. For a week, I would suggest four days in Madrid...two for the city itself (its museums, palaces, and restaurants, etc), and one day each for day trips to Segovia and Toledo. Then I'd suggest 2 days for Granada to see the city and visit the Alhambra, the premier tourist site in Spain.

Or if you'd rather investigate Spain's Celtic roots, in northern Spain (Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria, etc.) you could visit Bilbao, Santander, Oviedo, Leon, Santiago de Compostela. Asturias was the only area of Spain never conquered by the Moors. Northern Spain is unlike any other part of Spain. It is mountainous and is the only part of Spain that stays green all year. There are beautiful national parks, caves where you can see actual prehistoric cave drawings, and quaint fishing villages along the coast, as well as wonderful university towns, castles, and cathedrals. The Rioja wine region is in that area, too.

Also - take a look at the itenerary for Rick's tour - you can get a feel for what they recomend for the week - then adjust by adding more in the cities you feel youd like to spend more time in! Get a couple of books as well (RS, Lonely Planet and Rough Guide) for the area you chose. This may help you narrow down your question to very specific "searchable" or easier to answer questions givign you more suggestion and details you can imagine!!
